Chaldean numerology is the older of the two major systems, tracing back to ancient Babylon. Unlike the Pythagorean method, it assigns letter values by sound and vibration rather than alphabetical order, uses only the numbers 1 to 8 for letters (9 is considered sacred and is never assigned), and pays close attention to the compound number — the total before it is reduced.

That compound number is the distinctive feature of the system. Two names can share the same root digit but carry very different compound numbers, and Chaldean practitioners read the compound as the deeper, hidden influence and the root as the outward character.
